How studying by Distance Learning through us works

Our distance learning programmes work in almost the same way as traditional college based study, but they are more flexible. The study is built around you, which helps take the stress out of balancing your studies with your job and your personal life.

You will have a one-to-one relationship with your tutor rather than being part of a large class all doing the same thing in the same place at the same time. With this flexibility you can :

  • Register and start whenever you want - any day of the year
  • Take as much time as you need - study quickly, slowly, steadily or in intensive blocks, whichever suits you best
  • Study from anywhere in the world - even if you relocate, you can continue to study
  • Overcome your own specific weaknesses by focus on them with your tutor

The way you study will be the way that suits you best, and because you follow a course which has been built around your needs and preferences, you should be more successful with good results.

All the tuition you need

We believe that one of the most important parts of your course is the support provided by tutor and you will have access to this throughout the duration of your study. You will be able to contact the tutor as much as you need to and as often as you need.

All the flexibility that you need

If you are not sure about distance learning or CIPS, you can choose to study one unit at a time and find out whether it is the right programme for you and the right style of study.

You don't have to wait or aim for any particular term date. You can start at any time which suits you. If, for example your employer wishes you to be developed to take on additional responsibilities, you can register for a course the next day rather than waiting until the next year.

Your learning comes to you because there is no compulsory travel except to the exam centre and no college campus to commute to after work.

If you have to relocate because of your job, you can continue to study and we will help you to find an exam centre where CIPS can send the papers for you to sit.

Your studies do not need to take control of you but should fit in with your many commitments.  If something happens with your job or family which affects your studies, then let us know and we will work with you to decide the best way forward.

How long will your course take?

This depends on your personal strengths and weaknesses, the courses you have taken in the past, your experience and the research and reading you decide to do. You may find that you move through one unit more quickly than another.

The following are average timings for the completion of each programme :

  • The International Certificate can be completed in eight to twelve months. (International Students)
  • The International Advanced Certificate can also be completed in eight to twelve months. (International Students)
  • Level 3 Certificate can be completed in eight to twelve months. (For UK Students only)
  • Level 4 Foundation Diploma can also be completed in eight to twelve months. (All Students)
  • Level 5 Advanced Diploma can also be completed in ten to twelve months. (All Students)
  • Level 6 Graduate Diploma can also be completed in twelve to fourteen months. (All Students)

In addition to studying the material provided, students should reserve some time to keep up with developments in purchasing, supply and business in general. This can be done through newspapers, magazines, radio, TV and the Internet. CIPS also publish a useful reading list.

Your course will include

The course will be a combination of tutor support and study material. The main difference is that you are in charge of your own timetable, otherwise it is similar to a conventional course. You work from the study materials rather than going to lectures and the contact with your tutor will be by email, post, telephone or fax instead of face-to-face. Your tutor will discuss and agree a study schedule with you depending on the time available to you to study. See a sample study schedule ---here---

There is still plenty of coursework and you can also join our discussion group so that you can stay in touch with other students - to share experiences, advice or simply network. This is by networking, telephone and email too, so again it is flexible.

Online College

We are here to make it all work. To sort out any problems. We are confident we can do that. We will provide you a password to access CIPS resources in the student area of the website.

Efficient learning

Distance learning is cost effective - the fees all go towards your course, whether it is on student support or the study programme itself - and your attendance record is automatically 100%

Fast track service

Most students can start their study within eight working days of enrolling with us. Assignments sent to your tutor should be returned to you within two working days. And if you need us immediately, then you can call, fax or email your tutor.

Discussion group

There is a telephone/email discussion group so that you have an opportunity to contact other students, share ideas, and network. Having other people to compare experiences with is one thing that many students think they will miss but the discussion group deals with this, putting you in contact with other students around the world.

Individual Tuition

Tutors consider all students as individuals. Throughout the unit they will work with you to build understanding, eliminate weaknesses and prepare you for exams. There are two main ways in which tutors work with students. Coursework is marked by the tutor to assess your progress, and you can contact your tutor directly to discuss topics when you need to.

Course work

There are regular self-checking exercises in the study material to help you gauge your progress and to build your confidence. In addition you will submit to your Tutor weekly workbook activities and progress check questions. Most units have between six and eight exercises.

The tutors will use your coursework to check your understanding and preparation for exam. It will be a central part of your studies. The tutor will set for each unit atleast two mock exams to be attempted under exam conditions. One of the weeks is usually scheduled a few weeks before the actual exam. See a sample study schedule ---here---

Help line

The tutor will guide you through the subject. The tutor is there to mark your coursework, answer your subject questions, and provide advice, support and encouragement. You can contact your tutor whenever you need to, with any problems you might have in understanding the work. The one-to-one reply you receive will be specific to your question. You can contact your tutor by email, post, telephone or fax, whichever method works best for the question that you have.

If there is something you need to know, we will try to answer it for you.
